Travel To Go is a leading luxury vacation provider and it knows that complaints and problems on vacations are the last thing that travelers should have to deal with. As a world leader in vacation fulfillment, Travel To Go knows a thing or two about planning out the ideal vacation, and is sharing that knowledge with vacation planners. From airport travel tips to avoiding the latest travel scams, the Travel To Go complaints reduction team is lending a helping hand.
Unsurprisingly to Travel To Go, complaints commonly heard from travelers often referred to long waits and the dreaded missed or canceled flights at airports around the world. Nothing can start a vacation off on the wrong foot like a sour airport experience. Of course the most sensible advice is to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare. Something many infrequent fliers may not realize is that many restrictions are in place on luggage and carry-on bags. Always plan ahead and research what sized bags certain airlines allow and ensure that all packed items are approved. By adhering to the regulations and going into the airport prepared, travelers are taking a large step toward eliminating any unnecessary delays.
Another common travel issue seen in Travel To Go complaints collected from travelers are travel scams. Travel scams follow people all around the world, but luckily there are a many resources available to help vacation planners do their best in avoiding becoming the victim of a scam. Travel To Go recommends that travelers refrain from using ATMs in questionable locations, and instead choose to use machines that are within reputable businesses and in well-lit and populated areas. Leave expensive jewelry and accessories at home, as it is likely to grab the attention of watchful pickpockets. Another bit of advice is to simply refrain from accepting any gifts, as there are countless scams out there where scam artists trick travelers into paying for something that they initially promised was free.
With these vacation improvement techniques in mind courtesy of Travel To Go, complaints are sure to decline throughout the Spring and Summer months – making 2014 the best year yet to plan a dream vacation getaway.

Carefree travel has long been the province of backpackers, 20-somethings and other free spirits without mortgages, jobs and other worldly concerns.

But if retired couple Lynne and Tim Martin have their way, there will be a new model for the wave of aging baby boomers nearing retirement: Hit the road, travel around the world, and live like locals in cities and villages for extended periods of time, with no permanent home.

Lynne, 73, and Tim, 68, began their adventure in 2010, when they realized they shared a deep desire to travel and yearned for something a bit different for retirement. So soon after they sold their California home and set out to live abroad, one country at a time.

Lynne calls it the “home free” movement, a term she lays claim to coining when she named the blog she created, “Home Free Adventures,” to keep family and friends in the loop.

Lynne’s new memoir "Home Sweet Anywhere: How We Sold Our House, Created a New Life, and Saw The World," released Tuesday, recounts the couple’s journey — from details of how they downsized most of their belongings and pared down expenses to vivid encounters of living in diverse regions of the world. The book, organized chronologically, is sprinkled with stories, tips and advice, aimed to inspire.

Over the past four years, the Martins have lived in nine countries. It’s a dream they feel that is within reach for others — with proper planning.

The Martins, who like to call themselves “nomadic retirees” or “senior gypsies,” currently are based in a colorful neighborhood on Staten Island, which is much cheaper than Manhattan, while they promote the book. “It’s like its own little country,” she said, with many people from Haiti and other Caribbean islands. “We discovered a beautiful promenade along the river. It’s gorgeous, with trees and flowers about to bloom. It looks like Paris.”

Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Ukraine on April 22 to stress US support for Kiev and steps to improve its energy security amid a crisis with neighboring Russia.

During his meetings with government leaders and civil society groups, Biden will "underscore the United States' strong support for a united, democratic Ukraine that makes its own choices about its future path," a White House statement said Saturday.

The announcement came just a day after Washington unveiled sanctions against six of Crimea's breakaway leaders, including the official who signed the deal with Moscow to split the peninsula from Ukraine.

A first wave of US sanctions unveiled in March had blacklisted officials and businesspeople close to Russian President Vladimir Putin to protest Moscow's takeover of Crimea.

While in Kiev, Biden will "consult with government officials on the international community's efforts to help stabilize and strengthen Ukraine's economy and to assist Ukraine in moving forward on constitutional reform, decentralization, anti-corruption efforts and free and fair presidential elections on May 25th," the White House said.

Washington has repeatedly urged Moscow to de-escalate tensions and withdraw Russian troops from Ukraine's eastern border in the worst East-West standoff since the Cold War.

Earlier Saturday, Kalashnikov-wielding gunmen seized two security buildings in Ukraine's restive eastern rust belt amid spreading protests demanding the Russified region join Kremlin rule.

And the White House said these and other moves would figure in Biden's talks in Ukraine.

"The vice president will discuss the latest developments in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists, apparently with the support of Moscow, continue an orchestrated campaign of incitement and sabotage to destabilize the Ukrainian state," it said.

"In addition, the vice president will consult on the latest steps to enhance Ukraine's short- and long-term energy security."

Moscow has massed tens of thousands of troops on Ukraine's eastern border after annexing the Crimean Peninsula and nearly doubled the rates it charges Kiev for natural gas.

During his visit, Biden will also "meet with various Ukrainian people to hear their aspirations and deepen the partnership between the United States and Ukraine," according to the White House.

European Union and US diplomats are preparing their first direct talks with their Russian and Ukrainian counterparts in Geneva on Thursday.

Looking for top tier luxury hotels, restaurants or spas in North America or Asia? For more than half a century the famous 4 and 5-star ratings from the Forbes Travel Guide have guided travelers to superior properties. Need a standout fine dining experience in Europe or major cities worldwide? The 1-3 stars of the vaunted Michelin Red Guides have helped happily feed generations of gastronomes. While these ratings are all imprecise, they are informed, and even as travelers argue over whether this 4-star hotel should be a five, or this 3-star Michelin deserves only two, in general they act as a safety net for travelers trying new places. There are several other quality standards travelers can look to in hotels (and spas and restaurants), including membership in groups such as Leading Hotels of the World, Preferred Hotels or Relais & Chateaux, all of which have lists of standards and quality checkpoints members must meet.
But what about the fast growing vacation category of villa and home rentals? Thanks to the explosion of online booking engines and the growth in multi-generational large group travel, these are more popular than ever, yet remain one of the most varied and least consistent lodging options. After all, while there are plenty of luxury homes for rent (see the recent Forbes.com story on how luxury home rentals are especially well-suited to ski vacations), each is unique and different. That’s where famed travel critic Andrew Harper comes in. It’s a new role for Harper (pseudonym, not his real name), who since 1979 has been best known for his highly critical, inspection-based travel newsletter, The Hideaway Report.

Four travel journalists recently captured top honors in the 2014 IPW Travel Writing Awards competition. The winners were announced on April 7 during a media reception at the IPW trade show in Chicago. The U.S. Travel Association, which coordinates the awards, received nearly 200 contest entries from journalists representing more than 50 countries. The honors were awarded as follows:

Best IPW Host City (Las Vegas) Article — British travel writer Peter Ellegard captured top honors in this category, which focuses on articles highlighting the previous year’s IPW host city. His story, Swinging on the Strip, appeared in the autumn 2013 issue of Great Golf Magazine, a U.K. luxury travel and lifestyle publication. The contest’s judges noted that Ellegard had produced a “great article on an activity that is probably not top of mind for most Vegas visitors: golf. This witty, informative article proves that Las Vegas really does have it all.”

Best U.S. Travel Destination Article — Due to the high number of outstanding entries received this year, the judges selected two winners in this category. Freelance journalist and photographer Bas van Oort won for his story Go West! From New York to Seattle by Train, which was published in the July-August 2013 issue of Reizen Magazine, the largest consumer travel magazine in the Netherlands. Van Oort’s beautifully illustrated article chronicled his month-long rail trip across the United States, “effectively capturing the charm of cross-country train travel.”

Also winning in this category is Spud Hilton, travel editor of the San Francisco Chronicle. His February 2013 article, Riverboat Revival: Steamer American Queen resumes exploring past on the Mississippi current, “did a fabulous job of capturing the essence of what many consider to be true Americana: paddleboats and the Mississippi.” Hilton noted that his time aboard the genteel American Queen made “it easy to see what motivated Mark Twain, John Fogerty and others who were fascinated by the river and life on it.”

Best Trade Publication Article — Carlos Pérez Galván, chief of information for Latin American Meetings, was recognized in this category for his article Houston, el recinto para reuniones y convenciones (“Houston: The venue for meetings and conventions”). The piece was published in Más Expos Congresos & Convenciones, a meeting trade resource in Mexico. Judges felt the article did a nice job of describing the amenities, facilities and distinct city personality that make Houston a terrific destination for meeting and convention groups.

During their evaluation of the entries, the judges looked for articles that featured original ideas and exceptional storytelling skills, as well as prose that would inspire readers to travel to the United States.

The IPW Travel Writing Awards competition is held annually. Each of the winning writers receives $1,000 and an award certificate. This year’s competition was sponsored by CityPASS, the company that offers discounted admission booklets for the top attractions in 11 North American destinations.

Italy has rescued 4,000 migrants from boats trying to reach European shores in the past 48 hours in a deepening immigration crisis, the interior minister said on Wednesday.

Better sea conditions and turmoil in Libya, grappling with chaos and rampant militias three years after the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi, have increased the numbers risking the perilous sea journey from North Africa to try to reach Europe.

"The emergency is getting worse and there is no halt to the boats arriving," Interior Minister Angelino Alfano told state-owned RAI radio. "This issue is serious and Europe must take it in hand, immediately, because this is not a Mediterranean border but a European border."

Rome has repeatedly urged the European Union to take a greater role in policing the seas as two-thirds of migrants who reach Italy travel onwards to other countries in the region. The interior minister said 15,000 migrants had arrived in Italy by sea since the start of 2014.

Rescues over the past two days included one group of 1,049 migrants containing 91 women and three babies, who were spotted by a navy helicopter and a drone as their boats ran into difficulty. They were rescued by ships and brought to ports on the island of Sicily.

Alfano said that on Wednesday two commercial vessels alerted by Italian forces were aiding 661 people in distress and that at least one migrant on the boats had died during the journey.

"As we speak, there are people smugglers, merchants of death, earning and profiting from human beings, from the death of other men, and even from our timely sea rescues because it makes their trips shorter, therefore more profitable and less risky," he said.

Italy is a mayor gateway into Europe for migrants who cross the Mediterranean, often in overcrowded and flimsy vessels.

Two shipwrecks last October, one in which 366 Eritreans drowned and another in which 200 mostly Syrians died, prompted the Italian government to put its navy on permanent patrol in the waters between Sicily and North Africa.

President Barack Obama will travel on Wednesday to a Texas military base to honor the victims of a deadly shooting by a troubled US soldier, the White House said.

Presidential adviser Dan Pfeiffer told CBS television on Sunday that president and First Lady Michelle Obama will attend a memorial service at the Fort Hood army base for three soldiers who died last week when Army specialist Ivan Lopez, 34, opened fire at the sprawling military facility.

"The president and the first lady send their thoughts and prayers out to the victims and families and everyone on the base, and they're going to actually travel down on Wednesday to the memorials they're running," Pfeiffer told CBS's "Face the Nation" program.

In addition to the dead, Lopez, 34, wounded 16 people before taking his own life with his .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol.

Military officials have said that Lopez -- who served in Iraq in 2011 but did not see combat -- was being examined for post traumatic stress disorder, although they do not know what led him to open fire on his fellow soldiers.

Travel agents worldwide can now confidently access the luxury holiday house/villa market as an alternative option to hotels and resorts, thanks to the ingenuity of a Kiwi entrepreneur.

Fear of bogus properties, insecure funds and variable standards of accommodation have always kept the high-end private home rental sector firmly in the too-hard-and-scary basket for travel agents to book for their clients.

But the launch of a new technology product by Wellington-based Campbell Bevan at the International Luxury Travel Market in Cannes has brought about a radical change in the holiday accommodation landscape. A guest of Tourism New Zealand at the prestigious annual event in France, Amazing Accom managing director Mr Bevan introduced travel agents to a white label online booking and itinerary-building software.

"The first of its kind in the world, the technology will enable agents to book holiday houses/villas for their clients in a safe and standardised online environment," said Mr Bevan whose company Amazing Accom specialises in luxury house/villa accommodation.

"They can be confident their clients' funds are 100 percent secure, and cancellation policies and changes to bookings are transparent and fair to all parties . . . as well as guaranteeing the agents a healthy commission.

"Amazing Accom holiday houses and villas are hand-selected and reviewed, and therefore guaranteed to be of the highest standard. They are professionally managed and fully serviced just like a hotel," said Mr Bevan.

The term "white label" means when a travel agent uses the secure booking site, there is no reference to Amazing Accom branding. The property names and URL are blank allowing the agent to apply his or her own branding. The client cannot bypass the agent and go directly to Amazing Accom or the property owner. There is therefore no risk to the travel agent of losing his or her client.

Amazing Accom holds the client's funds securely until the day after check-in and also offers round-the-clock free, independent, expert advice in case problems should arise.

One of four Kiwi tourism companies that travelled to the four-day Cannes event at the invitation of Tourism New Zealand, Amazing Accom was in high demand with the international luxury travel buyers.

"Travel agents from around the world - Russia, China, India, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Canada and the United States - have already signed up and are now accessing 2000-plus luxury houses and villas in 21 different countries for their high-end clients," said Mr Bevan.

"Given a choice, why would discerning travellers book hotel rooms and share facilities with thousands of others when they can have an entire fabulous house or villa to themselves with a private swimming pool, tennis court, beach, chef, housemaids and other amazing facilities for a cheaper per-person, per-night rate," said Mr Bevan.

"We want travel agents to be aware of the tremendous potential of this new technology. This is a game-changer.

"Amazing Accom is the only company in the world to have this innovative smart software - and it is proprietary."

So what's in it for Amazing Accom and the owners and property managers of accommodation who list online with the company?

"Our properties get significantly more bookings worldwide, and we increase the total holiday house/villa market - something we are passionate about," said Mr Bevan.Recommend more: All  climbing shoes  in wholesale shoes store.

These are a home away from home and are found across all the Hawaiian islands. From family-friendly suites to upscale comfort, condominiums mostly feature separate living and bedrooms and full kitchens or kitchenettes.

Some offer in-room laundry facilities allowing you to pack light - so more room for that famous Hawaiian shopping on the flight home.

Condos allow the option of spreading out and often have flexible sleeping arrangements as well as multiple bathrooms (so no living on top of each other).

They are a great way to save money on food as you can cook your own meals - also great for those fussy eaters!

Supermarkets and general stores are easily found throughout the islands, and if you are shopping at a Safeway supermarket make sure you sign up to their discount programme (similar to a Onecard here in New Zealand).

Great for if you're travelling on a budget. But if you don't feel like cooking every night (you are on holiday after all) many restaurants are within walking distance.

The government in Suva said in a statement, it "always believed the sanctions were ill conceived and served only to discourage talented and qualified individuals from serving Fijian people."

"The removal of sanctions is a positive step towards restoring normal relations between out governments," the statement said.

The lifting of the travel sanctions were announced by Australia and New Zealand earlier today.

The bans have been in place since December 2006, following the military coup that brought Mr Bainimarama to power.

The recent move is the latest by the Australian Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, to restore relations with Fiji in recognition of progress towards a democratic election.

Ms Bishop said the decision was in line with the Australian Government's policy of re-engagement and normalisation of bilateral relations with Fiji.

Her New Zealand counterpart, Murray McCully, said the removal of remaining bans recognised the progress being made in Fiji towards holding free and fair elections.

He said the long-awaited Electoral Decree has been published, an elections supervisor appointed and more than half a million people have been registered to vote.

The sanctions affected interim prime minister Frank Bainimarama, his ministers, senior military and judicial figures and their families and have been in place for seven years.

Earlier this month, Mr Bainimarama stepped down as commander of Fiji's military in order to contest the elections.

Ms Bishop said Australia welcomed the opportunity to support Fiji's return to democracy within the Pacific family.

She said the Australian government was confident that lifting travel restrictions would lay a framework for closer dialogue and cooperation with Fiji on bilateral and regional issues.

Ms Bishop has promised Australia will work with the interim government of Fiji and other donors to support Fiji's election preparations.

Opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman, Tanya Plibersek, said the Australian Government must keep the pressure on Fiji to ensure democratic reform does not stall.

"Labor wants Fiji to return to democracy and this includes independence of the judiciary, reinstatement of rule of law, democratic elections, freedom of speech, freedom of association, and a free media," she said.

"This is Australia's long-held position, in line with regional and Commonwealth views, and Labor expects Julie Bishop to reinforce it."

On Friday, the interim government announced Fijians will go to the polls on September 17.

Adrenaline junkies looking for their next travel adventure may want to consider consulting a new list of extreme destinations for 2014 that includes bungee jumping into the belly of an active volcano in Chile and touring a war zone.

The adventure travel ideas proposed by Cheapflights aren’t for the faint-hearted. But they may set many a thrillseeker’s heart aflutter with trips that span Fiji, Mexico, Africa, Oman and Bolivia.

Here's a selection of Cheapflights' adventure travel idea hotspots for 2014:

Swim with the sharks in Fiji
On Beqa Island, divers plunge into the ocean and get to see sharks up close and personal -- that is, without the protection of a cage. Divers can expect to meet largely harmless species like the Tawny Nurse Shark and Blacktip Reef Shark. But here's where the dive description may lose a few people: “The Bull Sharks and the Tiger Sharks however are clearly a class in their own. They are Apex Predators who grow to an impressive size and have a notorious reputation for attacking humans.” Happy diving.

Volcano bungee jumping in Chile
This stunt involves jumping into the mouth of an active volcano from a helicopter, within 700 feet (213 meters) of molten lava, after which you stay suspended upside down traveling 130 km above the simmering crater.

Cycling the Death Road in La Paz, Bolivia
It’s been dubbed the world’s most dangerous road: a treacherous downhill stretch of 64 km that starts on snow-covered plains and descends to the Amazonian jungle. Oh, and it also includes a 3.6-km drop down a sheer cliff face.

Base jumping in Mexico
The Cave of Swallows is deep enough to house a high-rise building and has inspired kamikaze adrenaline junkies to jump into the belly of the earth with a parachute.

Tour a war zone
This one’s for anyone who’s ever dreamed of being a hard-hitting war correspondent or photojournalist from the trenches. War Zone Tours offers guided tours in areas of conflict and past war zones like Iraq, Beirut and Africa led by ‘High Risk Environment Guides.’

Sandboarding in Oman
Desert sand dunes in parts of Oman can run as high 100 meters. Instead of snow, travelers hit the desert slopes with their boards, toboggans or quad bikes.

The founder of Barrhead Travel has told his staff that a "Yes" vote in Scotland's independence referendum would be "a disaster".

Bill Munro sent a memo to staff about what he saw as the dangers of independence and accused the SNP of misleading voters.

Business for Scotland, a pro-independence group, said Mr Munro's arguments "didn't make sense".

The businessman said he had the right to express a personal opinion.

Business For Scotland
Barrhead Travel is one of the largest independent travel agencies in the UK, employing 800 staff in more than 50 branches.

The memo from Mr Munro was sent to all staff and directors of the company, and was subsequently leaked on social media.

Mr Munro's message said: "I have been asked by many of my staff what my views of the referendum are."

The memo went on to say that independence would be "a disaster", particularly for Barrhead's branches in England and Ireland.

The opinions expressed are my own and not those of the company”

Bill Munro
It said: "As the weeks pass and more is discovered, the magnitude of the impending disaster should there be a 'Yes' vote becomes ever more apparent."

Mr Munro attached a copy of the Lyddon report, which was critical of the business implications of Scottish independence.

Gordon MacIntyre Kemp, the chief executive of pro-independence business group, Business For Scotland, said Mr Munro's arguments "don't make any sense".

He said: "Business for Scotland believes the business case is clear.

"The idea that in the event of a Yes vote, for example, there would be restrictions on trade, as outlined in the memo, doesn't make any sense. Day in, day out there is free trading taking place between independent countries.

He added: "Business for Scotland would be happy to outline the overwhelming case for independence to Bill Munro and let him see why we believe it is the business opportunity of a lifetime."

Mr Munro has also been criticised by "Yes" supporters on Barrhead's Facebook and Twitter pages.

'Put at risk'
In response to the criticism, Mr Munro said: "I decided to share my personal opinion which is that independence would not be good for Scotland, its businesses or its consumers.

"The opinions expressed are my own and not those of the company. Just as I have the right to express my own opinion, I respect that is true of everyone in Scotland, including the 800 employees of Barrhead Travel who will make their own views clear throughout the democratic process."

MP Jim Murphy, who was speaking on behalf of the pro-Union Better Together campaign, said Barrhead Travel was "yet another example" of an employer in Scotland saying that being part of the UK "is better for their business".

He added: "Being part of the UK means we can have the best of both worlds - a strong Scottish Parliament, with the guarantee of more powers, backed up by the strength, security and stability of being part of the larger UK. Independence puts that at risk."
